Techtonica is a game from the factory automation genre, with it being a sandbox building game centered around a deep sci-fi story. It can be played alone or multiplayer, so it’s super fun to try with your friends.
You start near an abandoned Production Terminal, which is named Lima. You pick your way through a destroyed building before walking up to Lima and starting to fix it up. You learn the basics of the game while crafting yourself new materials and tools. You upgrade your tech tree and finish upgrading Lima before you dig your way to Victor, another Production Terminal, which is where the game really starts. Going past here would probably be a spoiler, so that may be covered on this blog in the future.
After going through what is the basic ‘tutorial’ (aka upgrading PT Lima), you stumble upon another Production Terminal, Victor. Once you get to Victor, the game gets harder to progress forward, but you get to really start building factories. You unveil more tech and have much more space to build, ultimately leading to the slightly ruled sandbox game that is Techtonica.
Once you get later in the game, nearly everything is automated while you use your new materials to build even bigger, more powerful factories.
The game is still at v0.5, so it’s mostly unfinished. Production Terminals (PTs) act as stages of the game, with their upgrades being substages. There are currently only three PTs in the game, with room in the menu for three more.
Overall, Techtonica is a great game, with a mix of factory automation, sandbox creativity with the terraforming tools in the game, and logistics like power output and consumption. The game’s storyline is intertwined with unlocking things in the tech tree, so if you want to make big, complicated factories, the storyline isn’t exactly optional, but still in the background if you don’t want to listen to it. There is a few cutscenes, but the creators leave the game pretty open while the story is progressing.
Anyway, I would recommend trying Techtonica because it’s a great game that has a good mix of stuff for everyone. Fine, I am a bit biased, but still, give it a go!
That’s it for this post, and have a great day!
